The names of Madinah

Madinah Sharif has 95 names. There is no other place in the world with so many names. Now, we will mention those names:

  1. Asrib. This name is based on the name of a person from the descendants of Nuh (AS) who spread across. Asrib is also called “Yasrab” (Yasrib). This is the opinion of Ibn Abbas. According to Abu Ubaidah, it is the name of one side of Madinah. According to Muhammad bin Hasan bin Jabalah, it refers to a specific part of Madinah. However, the name is not preferred by the scholars. The word “Yasrab” is used in the Quran in reference to the words of the hypocrites. One meaning of Yasrab is destruction. Another meaning is to be caught in sin, or it may also refer to the name of a disbeliever, making it undesirable.

  2. Ardhullāh. Allah says in the Quran,

الم تَكُنْ أَرْضُ الله وَاسِعَةً فَتُهَاجِرُوا فيها: (Sura An-Nisa – 97)

Translation: “Was not the earth of Allah vast enough for you to migrate therein?” Madinah is, on one hand, Ardhullāh, the land of Allah. On the other hand, it is the land of Hijrah.

  3. Akkalatul Qurra.

  4. Iman, as Allah says,

وَالَّذِينَ تَبَرُوا الدَّارَ وَالإِيْمَانَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ يُحِبُّونَ مَنْ هَاجَرَ إِلَيْهِمْ

(Sura Al-Hashr—9)

Translation: “Those who settled the land and faith before them love those who migrate to them.”

  1. Al-Bara. Both words mean goodness. Madinah is a great center of the prophethood’s goodness for the whole world.

  2. Bahrah: meaning land.

  3. Bohairah: small land.

  4. Bahirah: land. The word Bahrah is also used to refer to a village.

  5. Balat: meaning tiles. These are commonly found in Madinah.

  6. Balad.

  7. Baytur Rasul. Allah says,

ربُّكَ مِنْ بَيْتِكَ بِالْحَقِّ (Sura Al-Anfal)

Translation: “Just as your Lord brought you out from your house with truth.”

  3. Al-Jabirah: meaning one who compensates for damage or harm.

  4. Jabir.

  5. Jabirah. These three names have the same meaning.

  6. Jaziratul Arab.

  7. Al-Junnatul Hasinah: meaning a strong shield.

  8. Habibah: meaning beloved.

  9. Al-Haram: the honored place.

  10. Haramur Rasulillah: meaning the honored place of Rasulullah.

  12. Khayirah.

  13. Khayrah: Both meanings are excellent.

  14. Ad-Dar (the 6th name refers to an ayah of the Quran).

  15. Darul Abbar: the abode of good people.

  16. Darus-Samaan: It has been mentioned in Hadith that Madinah is Darus Samaan, or the house of faith.

  17. Kubbatul Islam: Dome of Islam. In Hadith, it is mentioned: Al-Madinah Kubbatul Islam.

  18. Darus-Sunnah: the house of Sunnah.

  19. Darus-Salamah: the house of peace.

  20. Darul Fath: the house of victory.

  21. Darul Hijrah. Hazrat Umar ibn al-Khattab said, “Al-Madinah Darul Hijrah wa as-Sunnah.”

  22. Jatul-Hajr: distinguished by Hajr. It is named so because the Hajr Sharif of Rasulullah is located there.

  23. Jatul Hira: distinguished by an area.

  24. Jatun Nakhl: distinguished by date palm gardens.

  25. Salakah: mentioned in the Torah as a name for Madinah. It means intense heat.

  26. Sayyidatul Buldān: the best city.

  27. Shafiyah: meaning remedy and therapeutic. It is mentioned in Hadith that the soil of Madinah heals diseases. Therefore, it is called Shafiyah.

  28. Tabah.

  29. Taybah.

  30. Tayyibah.

  31. Tayeb. These four have the same meaning, which is pure. This city is purified from shirk.

  32. Jabbab: meaning fever. Initially, fever used to affect people here, but due to the supplications of Rasulullah (SAW), the fever was removed.

  33. Al-Aseemah: meaning the one who grants safety. This was the place of safety for the emigrants from Makkah.

  34. Al-Azra: meaning virgin. Its virginity was preserved from enemy invasion.

  35. Al-Arra: meaning virgin girl.

  36. Al-Arud: flat land.

  37. Al-Garra: meaning white in complexion or the best of everything.

  38. Galabah: meaning victory.

  39. Al-Fadihah: meaning disgraceful. This city does not accept impure things and people.

  40. Al-Qasimah: meaning one who suppresses rebellion. Anyone who rebels in this city, Allah destroys them.

  41. Darul Akhyar: the house of the good.

  42. Kariyatul Ansar: the village of the Ansar.

  43. Kariyatul Rasulillah: the village of Rasulullah.

  44. Kalbul Iman: the heart of faith.

  45. Al-Muminah: the believer.

  46. Al-Mubarakah: the blessed.

  47. Mubawa Al-Halal Wal-Haram: the place of Halal and Haram. Many revelations related to Halal and Haram were sent down in this place.

  48. Muba’yinul Halal Wal-Haram: the one who clarifies Halal and Haram.

  49. Al-Majburah: meaning forced. Allah has destined this land to be the dwelling place of His Prophet.

  50. Al-Muhabbah: meaning love.

  51. Al-Mahbubah: meaning beloved.

  52. Al-Mahburah: meaning joy and blessings.

  53. Al-Muhabbabah: meaning the lover.

  54. Al-Muharramah: the honored.

  55. Al-Mahfuzah: meaning protected. Allah has protected Madinah from plague and Dajjal.

  56. Al-Mukhtarrah: meaning chosen. This city was chosen by Allah for His Prophet.

  57. Madkhalu Sidq: the entrance of truth. Rasulullah (SAW) entered Madinah with truth.

  58. Al-Madinah.

  59. Madinatul Rasul: the city of the Prophet.

  60. Al-Marhumah: the place of mercy.

  61. Al-Marzuqah: the place of sustenance.

  62. Masjid Al-Aqsa. Tadeeli mentions this name in his book.

  63. Al-Miskinah: meaning humble. This city is the dwelling place of humble people.

  64. Al-Muslimah: the one who submits.

  65. Madja’ Ar-Rasul. The resting place of Rasulullah (SAW).

  66. Al-Mutaybah: the best.

  67. Al-Muqaddasah: the holy.

  68. Al-Makarru. Rasulullah made a dua: اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ لَنا بِهَا

قَرَارًا وَرَزْقًا حَسَنًا Translation: “O Allah, grant us stability and good sustenance in Madinah.” This name is derived from the word “Karar.”

  2. Al-Makīnah: meaning dignity.

  3. Muhajir: the place of migration.

  4. Al-Muwafiyah: the one who fulfills promises.

  5. An-Najiyah: the saved.

  6. Nobla: meaning noble.

  7. An-Nahr: intense heat.

  8. Al-Hajrah: intense heat.

  9. Yasrab.

  10. Yandud: famous fragrance.

  11. Yandur: This name is mentioned in the Torah.

Each of these names has significance, and they are deeply connected to Madinah.
