Meaning of Rukn al-Yamani

Literal Meaning

The term “Rukn al-Yamani” (الرُّكْنُ اليَمَانِي) is derived from two Arabic words:

  • Rukn (رُكْن) meaning corner
  • Yamani (يَمَانِي) meaning related to Yemen

So, the literal meaning is:

“The Yemeni Corner” — the corner of the Kaaba that faces the direction of Yemen.

Islamic Meaning

In Islamic terminology, Rukn al-Yamani refers to one of the four corners of the Kaaba, located on the southwestern side.

It is a blessed part of the Kaaba that pilgrims may touch during Tawaf, following the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, if it can be done easily without causing harm or crowding.

The Prophet ﷺ used to touch this corner during Tawaf:

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَمْسَحُ الرُّكْنَ الْيَمَانِي وَالْحَجَرَ الأَسْوَدَ

Translation

“The Prophet ﷺ used to touch the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone.”
