Guide to Sunnah Acts During Hajj That Many Pilgrims Miss

Hajj is one of the greatest acts of worship in Islam. Every year, millions of Muslims travel to Makkah with hearts full of hope, seeking forgiveness, mercy, and closeness to Allah. While most pilgrims focus on completing the obligatory rituals of Hajj, many often miss important Sunnah acts that were practiced by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ during his Farewell Pilgrimage.

These Sunnah acts may not invalidate the Hajj if left out, but following them increases the spiritual beauty and reward of the pilgrimage. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Take your rituals from me.”

(Sahih Muslim)

This statement reminds Muslims that Hajj should not only be completed correctly but should also be performed according to the Sunnah as much as possible.

In this guide, we will explore the important Sunnah acts during Hajj that many pilgrims overlook and explain why they matter.

1. Preparing the Heart Before the Journey

Many pilgrims spend months preparing luggage, visas, and travel plans but forget the spiritual preparation.

One of the Sunnah practices before Hajj is sincere repentance (Tawbah). The Prophet ﷺ encouraged believers to purify themselves from sins before major acts of worship. Pilgrims should ask forgiveness from Allah and also seek forgiveness from family, friends, and anyone they may have wronged.

Another forgotten Sunnah is making a sincere intention purely for Allah. Some people perform Hajj for status, social recognition, or photography. But true Hajj must be for Allah alone.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Actions are judged by intentions.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari)

Pilgrims should also learn the rulings of Hajj before traveling instead of depending entirely on group leaders.

2. Performing Ghusl Before Entering Ihram

Many pilgrims simply wear the Ihram garments without performing Ghusl (ritual bath), even though this is a Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.

Before entering into Ihram, the Prophet ﷺ cleaned himself, applied perfume, and then wore the Ihram garments. This shows that Islam values cleanliness and dignity even in worship.

Men should wear clean white Ihram clothes, while women may wear modest clothing without specific colors.

Applying perfume before Ihram is also Sunnah, but perfume should not be applied after entering the state of Ihram.

3. Reciting the Talbiyah Frequently

One of the most beautiful Sunnahs of Hajj is constantly reciting the Talbiyah:

“Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayka la sharika laka labbayk. Innal hamda wan-ni‘mata laka wal-mulk, la sharika lak.”

Sadly, many pilgrims stop reciting it after a short time or replace it with unnecessary conversations.

The Prophet ﷺ recited the Talbiyah loudly and frequently throughout the journey. Men are encouraged to raise their voices moderately, while women should recite softly.

The Talbiyah is a declaration of servitude and devotion to Allah. It reminds pilgrims that they have answered Allah’s call.

4. Entering Makkah with Humility

Many pilgrims become overly excited when entering Makkah and focus more on taking pictures than reflecting spiritually.

The Prophet ﷺ entered Makkah with humility, lowering his head out of respect for Allah. This teaches Muslims to approach the sacred city with gratitude and reverence.

A pilgrim should remember that being invited to Hajj is a blessing from Allah, not a personal achievement.

5. Making Abundant Dua When Seeing the Kaaba

A commonly missed Sunnah is making heartfelt dua upon first seeing the Kaaba.

The first sight of the Kaaba is an emotional and powerful moment. Scholars mention that this is a special time for supplication.

Instead of rushing to take photos or videos, pilgrims should pause and sincerely ask Allah for forgiveness, guidance, Jannah, and blessings for themselves and others.

6. Performing Tawaf Calmly Without Hurting Others

One of the biggest mistakes during Hajj is pushing, shouting, and harming other pilgrims during Tawaf.

The Prophet ﷺ performed Tawaf with calmness, dignity, and patience. He never harmed anyone to touch the Black Stone.

Many pilgrims think touching the Black Stone is obligatory, but it is Sunnah. If reaching it causes harm, one should simply point toward it and say “Allahu Akbar.”

Islam strongly forbids harming fellow Muslims.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“A Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand other Muslims are safe.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari)

7. Praying Two Rak‘ahs Behind Maqam Ibrahim

After completing Tawaf, it is Sunnah to pray two Rak‘ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim if possible.

However, many pilgrims either skip this Sunnah or create difficulty for others by insisting on praying directly behind the Maqam in crowded conditions.

If the area is crowded, the prayer can be performed anywhere in Masjid al-Haram.

In these Rak‘ahs, it is Sunnah to recite:

Surah Al-Kafirun in the first Rak‘ah

Surah Al-Ikhlas in the second Rak‘ah

8. Drinking Zamzam with Intention

Many people drink Zamzam casually without remembering its spiritual significance.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The water of Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for.”

(Ibn Majah)

Pilgrims should drink Zamzam while facing the Qiblah, saying “Bismillah,” and making sincere dua.

One may ask Allah for knowledge, health, forgiveness, righteous children, or entry into Jannah.

9. Performing Sa’i with Reflection

Sa’i between Safa and Marwah is often rushed by pilgrims who focus only on completing the ritual quickly.

This act commemorates the struggle of Hajar (AS), who ran between the hills searching for water for her son Ismail (AS).

Pilgrims should reflect on:

Trust in Allah

Patience during hardship

The power of sincere effort

Men are encouraged to jog lightly between the green markers, which is a Sunnah many forget.

10. Spending the Day of Arafah in Dua

The Day of Arafah is the most important day of Hajj. Yet many pilgrims waste precious hours sleeping, chatting, or using mobile phones.

The Prophet ﷺ spent the day making continuous dua and dhikr.

He said:

“The best supplication is the supplication on the Day of Arafah.”

(Tirmidhi)

Pilgrims should:

Raise their hands in dua

Cry before Allah

Seek forgiveness sincerely

Remember death and the Hereafter

This is a day when Allah frees countless people from Hellfire.

11. Combining and Shortening Prayers Properly

During Hajj, the Prophet ﷺ combined and shortened certain prayers in Mina and Arafah.

Many pilgrims either do not know these rulings or ignore them completely.

Learning the Sunnah method of prayer during Hajj helps pilgrims follow the Prophet ﷺ more closely.

12. Sleeping in Muzdalifah

After leaving Arafah, pilgrims stay in Muzdalifah. One Sunnah many miss is actually resting and sleeping there.

The Prophet ﷺ slept in Muzdalifah before Fajr prayer. Some pilgrims spend the entire night talking, walking around, or using phones.

Resting is important because Hajj involves physical exhaustion.

Pilgrims should also collect pebbles calmly without believing exaggerated myths about the stones.

13. Making Dhikr While Throwing the Pebbles

Many pilgrims perform Ramy (stoning the pillars) mechanically without remembering Allah.

The purpose is not to “hit Shaytan” physically but to symbolize rejection of evil and obedience to Allah.

The Prophet ﷺ said “Allahu Akbar” with every throw.

Pilgrims should remain calm and avoid anger, pushing, or dangerous behavior.

14. Offering Sacrifice with Gratitude

For pilgrims performing Hajj Tamattu or Qiran, offering sacrifice is required.

Instead of treating it like a routine payment, pilgrims should remember the story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and Prophet Ismail (AS).

The sacrifice symbolizes:

Obedience to Allah

Submission to His command

Willingness to give up what we love for Allah

15. Shaving the Head Completely

Many men trim only a tiny portion of hair and miss the greater reward of shaving completely.

The Prophet ﷺ made dua three times for those who shaved their heads and once for those who shortened their hair.

Women should trim a small portion from the ends of their hair.

16. Maintaining Good Character Throughout Hajj

One of the most neglected Sunnahs is good manners.

Some pilgrims become impatient due to crowds, heat, and exhaustion. They argue, insult others, or complain excessively.

Allah says in the Quran:

“There is to be no sexual relations, no disobedience, and no disputing during Hajj.”

(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:197)

The Prophet ﷺ remained patient, gentle, and merciful even in difficult situations.

Good character during Hajj is among the greatest signs of accepted worship.

17. Increasing Dhikr at Mina

Many pilgrims treat Mina as merely a campsite for rest.

But the days of Mina are days of dhikr and remembrance of Allah.

Pilgrims should frequently recite:

Takbir

Tahmid

Tasbih

Quran

Instead of wasting time in idle talk or social media, they should use these blessed days wisely.

18. Performing Farewell Tawaf Properly

The final act before leaving Makkah is Tawaf al-Wada (Farewell Tawaf).

Sadly, many pilgrims rush through it emotionally distracted by shopping or departure plans.

This Tawaf should be performed calmly and sincerely as a final goodbye to the sacred house of Allah.

Pilgrims should leave Makkah with tears, gratitude, and hope that Allah accepted their Hajj.

19. Avoiding Excessive Photography

Modern technology has made photography a major distraction during Hajj.

Many pilgrims spend more time filming themselves than worshipping Allah.

While occasional photos are permissible, constantly taking selfies during Tawaf, Sa’i, and Arafah can reduce sincerity and concentration.

A pilgrim should focus on spiritual transformation rather than social media content.

20. Continuing Good Deeds After Hajj

An accepted Hajj changes a person permanently.

One of the signs of accepted Hajj is improvement after returning home.

Pilgrims should continue:

Daily prayers

Quran recitation

Charity

Good manners

Avoiding sins

The goal of Hajj is not simply completing rituals but becoming closer to Allah for life.

Conclusion

Hajj is not just a physical journey; it is a spiritual transformation. While fulfilling the obligatory rituals is essential, following the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ adds beauty, depth, and greater reward to the pilgrimage.

Many pilgrims unknowingly miss simple Sunnah acts because of lack of knowledge, distractions, or rushing through rituals. But these Sunnahs revive the true spirit of Hajj and help believers experience the pilgrimage the way the Prophet ﷺ performed it.

Every step during Hajj is an opportunity to remember Allah, seek forgiveness, and strengthen faith. Pilgrims should strive not only to complete Hajj correctly but also to embody patience, humility, sincerity, and devotion.

May Allah accept the Hajj of all pilgrims, forgive their sins, and allow every Muslim to experience the beauty of Hajj according to the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ. Ameen.
